Deryck Guyler - The Great Gnome Robbery

I was after this 1971 record for some time I had it on my eBay watch list, I finally got a notification that a copy had been listed been listed with a buy it now option within 3 minutes I had signed in to eBay the record had already sold, sometime later a second copy was listed, this time I brought the copy.

Mondays Boot Sale was larger than the previous Bank Holiday one and twice the size of the one held the day before, again I came home with nothing, there were some records but nothing stood out, In the picture the hedge is the original boundry of St Ebba's Hospital.

On the right hand side is the course of the old railway that served the Hospital cluster, for some reason the siding to St Ebba's boiler house was never built and the coal was unloaded at the passing loop and taken by cart to the boiler house there was a plentiful supply of labour (the patents), recently houses have been built on the old trackbed, when the railway was removed in 1950 the home owners whose houses backed onto the track were given the opportunity to buy the plot at the end of the garden for £25.

I managed to get out fishing on Wednesday from Brighton, it was the first long journey for my car since it was repaired last August, it got up the hills without slowing down and going into limp mode, I had thought it was water in the fuel tank it turned out to be a blocked fuel filter, the diagnostic computer came up with the same fault low fuel pressure from fuel filter and low fuel pressure at injectors. I got to Brighton with plenty of time to spare and had a breakfast at McDonalds, then back to the car get the fishing gear out and walk down to the boat, the journey to the Kingsmere Rocks was uneventful once the boat was anchored up the fish started coming in at a steady rate, one person had a Tope take his Bream bait and managed to get it to the boat, it's not uncommon for Tope to take the Bream baits they usually bite through the light nylon trace, I had a double hook up of a smoothound and a bream and after that had a steady flow of Bream. The area we were fishing has a bag limit of 4 fish per angler, everyone on board was told this at the start of the trip and a tally was being kept, however one angler was putting his fish into his personal box and was asked how many fish he had, he later admitted to having 9 these were moved to the communal fish box, their were 11 anglers so the max was 44 fish when that number was reached we moved to a different area where there were no bag limits, getting back to Brighton it was noticed that none of the other boats had gone out that day.

Walking along the pontoon I remembered back to a number of years ago when I had got back from a trip and walking along the same pontoon fighting for breath and thinking I'm going to have to give up sea fishing, a few weeks later I collapsed on the way home from work and was taken to Hospital, it was there that they discovered I had a Pulmonary Embolism, I spent almost a week in Hospital while they treated it.

Deryck Guyler - (You Can't Kill An Old) Desert Rat

Deryck Guyler in the guise of Potter the caretaker the character he played in the TV series Please Sir, the series and the spin off series The Fenn Street Gang produced 2 more records one by the Fenn Street Gang the other by Carol Hawkins which for some reason has always eluded me.

Jackie Pallo - One Little Packet Of Cigarettes

When I was young almost everybody smoked you were the social outcast if you did not smoke, smoking was allowed almost everywhere many tobacconists had cigarette machines outside, by the late 1960's early 70's people were becoming aware of the health problems linked to smoking and were giving up smoking, today I only know a few people who smoke. When I was buying some Lottery Tickets at Christmas people were buying packets of cigarettes I was taken back when the cashier said the price £19.70 substantially more than the last packet I brought 2/11 (15p).

Jackie Pallo - Everyone Should Get What I Got

Jackie Pallo real name Jack Ernest Gutteridge 12/01/1926 - 11/02/2006. A professional Wrestler, when ITV started broadcasting on 22/09/1955 the BBC had managed to get all the major sports under contract leaving very little for the new broadcaster, I recall motorbike scrambling, then the wrestling followed by the football results, Bonanza (thought this may be later) the Adventures Of  Robin Hood staring Richard Green, then over to BBC for Dr Who.

The Wrestling was narrated by Kent Walton other wrestlers that came to mind are Mick McManus & Les Kellett, the front rows were full of old ladies and if a wrestler got thrown out of the ring they would start hitting him with their handbags. As other sports came out of their BBC contract ITV managed to get rights to them the motorbike scrambling disappeared and wresting was moved to a late evening weekday slot.

Wednesday's fishing was cancelled due to wind, I got the message as I was leaving Wing Yips having just brought a number of boxes of squid for bait, they are now in the freezer for future trips, I have rebooked the trip for 6th May, I also got a phone call did I want to go fishing on Saturday from Gosport, unfortunately Saturday is the most difficult day, would have to take Biscuit for her walk at 03.00 I have done it before, my son does a Park Run and does not tend to get back till about 13.00, it was a good thing I declined as on Friday I developed a high temperature and it was still there Saturday.

Les Dawson - Send Her Roses

Les Dawson 2/2/1931 - 10/06/1993 came to fame after appearing on the TV show Opportunity Knocks, This is the first of 3 singes from Les Dawson, with a 4th in 1982 telling the story of Aladdin, I also came across singles by the Les Dawson Trio these are from a different a Les Dawson. From memory Les Dawson died of a heart attack that  came several days after he was pushing his vintage car.

On Friday I got back from walking Biscuit at about 11.30, there was nothing amiss with the cars parked outside, about 10 minutes later I looked out of the window and one of the parked cars had been clamped for no Road Tax, the owner quickly removed the stickers the car is still clamped, a few years ago a number of cars in the road were clamped for similar reasons, the road I live in is fairly close to the station and a number of people park their cars in it rather than pay for parking at the station, two of the cars were there unclaimed for a couple of weeks and later were towed away, sometimes it is cheaper to buy an old car and not tax or insure it, and if it gets clamped abandon it and get a replacement, I have my road tax on a Direct Debit and is paid at the beginning of April.

Easter Bank Holiday Monday Boot Sale

A box of  transformers/chargers

Today's Hook Road Arena Boot Sale, The sale took up about three quarters of the end field, there were a number of records I did not buy any, there was one I nearly brought but it was 2 for £5 I was not willing to pay that much, I did notice that there were a lot more people selling household items and cloths, perhaps a sign of the times, I did not buy anything an unusual occurrence.

Stephen Lewis - Tickets Please

Released 7th December 1973, Stephen Lewis (17 December 1926 – 12 August 2015) was playing the part of Inspector Blakey in the comedy series On The Buses, later played the part of Smiler in Last Of The Summer Wine, I can not recall ever hearing this record being played on the radio.

I have some relations who worked on the buses in Sydney Australia, some of the stories of their exploits and things that happened were funnier than the TV series.

The fishing trip I had booked for the 25th March from Brighton was cancelled due the high winds, the next trip I  have booked is also from Brighton after Black Bream on the Kingsmere Rocks on the 15th April, the last time I got out fishing on a boat was August last year.

Released in New Zealand September 1969 by Shane, this record also had an Australian release,

Saint Paul by Kiwi singer Shane

Memory Finaly Sorted

The failed 8TB SSD drive was returned to Samsung for repairs, it had a minor problem on its journey back, as the consignment it was in was turned back at Customs, it cleared Customs the next day, I had a message saying it would be delivered late in the day, it turned up at 09.00. The failed unit had been replaced with a new one. I had almost finished downloading the tracks from the original drives 2 x 4TB, 1 x 1TB and a 500GB when the drive failed, the download has been re started the 1TB & 500GB have been downloaded, the 2 x 4TB drives I have found it better to download it in chunks of about 25,000 tracks, even then it can take over 24 hours.   I also acquired a 4TB SSD drive at a reasonable price, for use a a general drive.

The 20TB HDD drive also failed, I went into Argos and was told they could not send it back for repairs as it had been posted to me, they could refund me the cost of the unit I took the refund and ordered anew one when I got home, in the 3 weeks since I brought the first one the price had gone up by £109, I was told in my local computer shop that the price of computer memory has sky rocketed due to the demand of it for AI, I noticed that some people were selling 4TB SSD memory for over £1,000.

During the week I had to go to the Pet Shop in Epsom, on the way out someone asked me if I could do a jump start, I said yes and he was most surprised that I had jump leads in the car, my son had battery problems with his car, I had never bothered to take them out of the car after he had the battery changed, when the battery cover was removed I noticed the white fur on the battery clamp and on the positive terminal, and also down the side of the battery, the battery was changed a couple of years ago, at its next service I was informed that the battery was leaking and needed replacing, the lady on the phone was not happy when I told her that it was a new battery fitted at the last service, saying it will be changed under warranty, it is a Varta battery and I hate Varta batteries (they always seem to leak), I used to watch YouTube videos of someone repairing old PC's, the PC's had often been standing around for a number of years and without fail every one that had a Varta battery the battery had leaked, none of the other makes of battery leaked. My car is booked in for the end of the month for a battery check.

A Word Of Warning

There is a lot of cheap Chinese SSD PC memory for sale i.e. 16TB for £13, the equivalent item if you can get it from a reputable manufacturer would cost in the region of £700+

Most places have sold out but a few were still showing it in stock at over £1,000+ some places are selling 8TB SSD divers for over £1,000, people are now asking over £1,000 for 4TB drives. it makes the cheap SSD drives look attractive.

A reputable SSD Drive

Do not Buy or Connect one of these cheap SSD drives to your PC, if you connect one and have other external drives connected the Chinese Cheap SSD drive will kill the other external drives.

Terry Knight - Saint Paul

A 1969 release, the story I head was that when the Beatles Abbey Road LP was released there was a rumour spreading that Paul McCartney had been killed in a car crash and that a he had been replaced in the band by a ringer, the cover of the Abbey Road LP was the first part of he announcement Paul McCartney has no shoes and the number plates of the cars parked in the road gave the rest of the information.  I can not recall where I first came across this track, possibly on a CD of reply/novelty or Beatles related tracks, I did get a limited edition CD that has 2 versions of this song and 2 other Paul McCartney tribute songs, I have since found a third version of this song, I do not know how limited the CD of Paul McCartney songs is as my copy is #66 other copies have been listed and they always seen to be #66.

"Saint Paul" - Terry Knight in Full Dimensional Stereo

More Additional Memory Woes

Last week I received an email informing me that the SSD drive had been repaired and was being despatched to me, I later got 2 additional emails saying the consignment my package was part of was being held at Customs, a further email said that the whole consignment had been returned to the sender, I I then got an apology for the delay the next day another email my package has cleared customs and should be at my pick up point on Monday.

The consignment returned reminded me of the short time I spent in stores, the returned broken/failed items that were returned to the stores were sorted and returned to the manufactures for refurbishment or repairs one company all items in the box had to be listed, it was routine anything you put in that box was listed on the paperwork, one week the box was returned there was an extra item in the box, the box was unpacked and every item checked with the inventory, it all corresponded, in the bottom of the box was a small screw that had come off one of the other items, because the screw was not on the inventory they rejected the whole consignment, the screw was returned to the item it came from and the consignment was accepted.

No Artist - G.S. Parody

This is a custom record released 1965, It is not known how or to whom the record was targeted to, the song relates to the policies of the then President LBJ, and how his policies were affecting the country, sounds familiar.

I first came across this record on WFMU 365 Days Project.

It's the first Hook Road Arena Boot Sale of the year today, there was quite lot of rain on Friday with some more rain on Saturday, the Arena is on clay soil and does not drain well or quickly in previous years when the early Boot Sales went ahead after rain many of the cars had to be towed out of the site.

Additional Memory

The new memory hub arrived earlier this week, the 8TB drive is with Samsung for repairs, hopefully it will be back next week or two, I have downloaded over 200,000 tracks from the original drives, two drives was blank, the tacks were over 3 drives.

I have got out one of the boxes of CD's and started loading them on to the PC, a number are on the PC I used to save everything at 192kbps now I save them at 320kbps, the reason I saved them at 192kbps was a long gone site called 'Grumpy's Golden Oldies' often there would be requests, towards the end it became a general request site with people requesting tracks people that had the track would provide it, on Sunday at the Hook Road Boot Sale I found a Procol Harum single, I went to the PC to upload some of the records and there on Grumpy's wants list was the Procol Harum record I had just brought, I started the' Lord Of The Boot Sale' blog shortly before the demise of 'Grumpy's Golden Oldies'. When I stated the blog I was after a title like 'Worlds Worst Records' but that title was already taken, the person running it had a much better collection of that type of record than I did, for a couple of years he had a radio show once a week on WFMU, I think the shows are still in the archive, The Worlds Worst Records Blog was taken down a couple of months ago, I am not sure if it was voluntary or forced there had been no new posts for sometime, the names of closed blogs are released for reuse after 7 years.

To download the CD's I am using an old Samsung free standing CD/DVD drive dating back to the times when PC's only had a CD drive, later they would add a second separate DVD drive and later the drives would be combined.

Pinky & Perky - Does Your Chewing Gum Lose Its Flavour On The Bedpost Overnight

Released 1959 and unusual for a UK released 45 some came in a Picture Sleeve, the arrangement of the song is taken direct from the Lonnie Donegan version including the jokes, in the introduction it is Perky who is snoring, to distinguish the puppets in TV's black & white days Perky always wore a hat, in more than one quiz this has come out as a queston, one young team had no idea who Pinky & Perky were.

Memory Failure

For some time I have been backing up all my music to an 8TB SSD drive, prior to this all my music was backed up to a pair of 4TB disc drives, I recently acquired some additional external memory and was backing up the data as I had realised that if the SSD was lost, stolen or failed I would lose all the data. half way through the transfer the SSD drive failed, the drive was still under warranty eventually after much correspondence has been sent for repair and will be returned with no data, I think the additional memory caused the problem so I have not used it since and will probably bin it, as a stopgap I brought a 20TB HDD drive and was going to buy a 16TB SSD drive unfortunately for me the SSD drive was out of stock.

I have a new connecting cable for the original drive on order and will transfer the data to the new back up memory, when I was doing the original transfer their was too much data to transfer in one go I was transferring it in blocks and was thinking shall I delete the block once I had transferd it luckily I decided not to delete once transferd.

Billy Jones & Ernest Hare - Does The Spearmint Lose Its Flavour On the Bedpost Overnight

The original of 'Does Your Chewing Gum Lose Its Flavor On The Bedpost Overnight, released 1924, I do not know if this record had a UK release, Spearmint was a registered trade mark this would have possibly restricted the playing on BBC radio, in the 1950's Lonnie Donigan changed it to  chewing gum.

In the early 1960's 78rpm records were common at jumble sales, I lived in Hampton, Middlesex until I was 21, their was a Farther and Son who went to all the Jumble Sales and brought all the 78's, their front room was floor to ceiling shelves full of 78's, in those days 45's were rare items at Jumble Sales/Junk shops but there were three that regulary turned up, the first was Lonnie Donnegan - Does Your Chewing Gum Loose It's Flavour On The Bedpost Over Night, the other records were Nina & Fredrick - Listen To The Ocean and Peter Sellers & Sophia Loren - Goodness Gracious Me, I have not seen a copy of these three records for many years.
I have in my collection two Lonnie Donigan vinyl 78's produced by Pye, these seen to be a bit of an oddity as when they were issued the people who brought 78's tended to have older record players that used traditional gramaphone needles, playing a vinyl record would destroy the record, people who had moden record players would buy the recording on a 45, Top Rank also produced vinyl 78's, these did not sell well and most ended up on Market Stalls being sold of cheap.
